Egypt has signed a $1.74 million cooperation agreement with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation to develop Egyptian cotton production.

The global market for organic cotton has grown by 67 per cent. Besides, there is also greater global awareness of the need to have good quality organic cotton seeds.

Sustainable textiles are textiles (or fabrics) that are grown and created in an environmentally friendly way, using minimal chemicals. Because chemicals are not used in sustainable textiles, there are less health problems that are associated with chemicals such as headaches, allergies, skin irritation, and respiratory problems.

Organic cotton is a highly sustainable fibre. It has been ranked above conventional cotton, viscose bamboo and linen in Higg´s Index. Globally, brands, retailers and consumers are increasingly supporting organic cotton. But to use organic fibres is not enough.

A new initiative aimed at accelerating the uptake of organic cotton has been launched with the backing of retailers such as C&A, H&M and Eileen Fisher, as well as Textile Exchange.
