Encasings are most familiar as covers used by allergy sufferers to protect mattresses, pillows and duvets from dust mites. However, these particle tight covers are also an important hygiene precaution anywhere where bed occupancy changes regularly. Greater use of special pillow encasings would make sense in hospitals and care homes and also in hotels.

A current research project sponsored by the Alliance for Industrial Research and running until the start of 2016 is working on developing innovative reusable operating theatre textiles which are more comfortable to wear and at the same time more durable because they can be cleaned in a gentler process.

The Hohenstein Institute will be holding its new webinar, “Feeling good means … wearing comfortable clothes!” on February 2, 2015. This one will be about skin sensory functions.

Clothing needs to be designed with safety in mind if escalators and playgrounds are not to become a death trap for children. The DIN EN 14682 standard “Safety of children’s clothing – Cords and drawstrings on children’s clothing” contains recommendations how garments for kids aged up to 14 years should be designed.
