According to a top official from Tirupur Exporters Association (TEA), the garment units in Tirupur will keep their shutters down from May 14 evening till May 24. This is being done to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Bangladesh’s apparel exports to the US sustained a negative growth of over 8% YoY and fetched $1.53 billion in January-March 2021, down from $1.67 billion in 2020. The exports from China and Vietnam saw positive growth.

The state government imposed a state-wide lockdown allowing only construction and manufacturing activities to take place. The KEA has requested for garment factories to function with COVID-19 measures and 50% attendance.

Textile industry plays a very important role in spinning the economy’s growth wheels by being the second largest employment generator (after agriculture) and accounting for seven per cent of industrial output in value terms, 12 per cent of the country’s export earnings and two per cent of India’s GDP.

No other time in history has the spotlight shined so much on textiles for its role in saving lives than at the present times. Textile materials’ capability to filter and destabilise SARS-CoV-2 is attracting a lot of attention, as well as sustainable fibres like cotton for many advanced applications.
