India ranked fifth in the global textile and clothing exports in 2018 though it was in the second position between 2014 and 2017, according to the Confederation of Indian Textile Industry.

Except the cotton yarn/fabs/made-ups/handloom products category, all the other categories under the textile segment reported a decline in exports in February.
Pakistan’s textile and clothing exports recorded a meagre 0.68 per cent year-on-year surge to $1.139 billion in December 2018, taking the six-month (July-December FY19) exports to $6.645 billion up 0.06 per cent.
India’s apparel exports to the US rose 4.3 per cent y-o-y in January 2017. Export volumes increased 8.6 per cent but export realisation fell four per cent.
Of the total €81 billion import of clothing from 28 countries to the European Union, 77 per cent is from Asia, which is almost double of what came out of Asia just 10 years ago. In the last 10 years, clothing import from the EU grew €32 billion with €30 billion coming from Asia alone.
Severe competition on global level and lack of initiatives and direction on the domestic front have made a dent in India´s textile exports with a dip in figures for FY 2014-15, diminishing the scope of achieving the cherished goals. S Joseph & M Karthik take an overall look at the scene.
