The Tamil Nadu Government has announced new schemes for promoting handloom, textile and khadi industries. A sum of Rs 175.23 crore would be spent on modernising six cooperative mills in the State. For the benefit of powerloom workers, 50 per cent subsidy would be provided to around 1,500 employees towards their insurance premium. Unveiling the new schemes, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said handloom, handicraft, textile and khadi industries contribute the second highest revenue to the State, next only to agriculture.
Yoga guru Ramdev-owned Patanjali Group is planning to venture into garments area and a ‘swadeshi’ jeans will be launched by end of the year or early next year. Baba Ramdev said the idea behind his expanding business ventures is to end the dominance of multinational corporations that have for decades been capitalising on the country’s market. There’s a great demand from the country’s youths for jeans, the reason why Patanjali has decided to launch “Indianised†jeans to compete with foreign brands, he said.
March next year, in order to substitute for Bt cotton. This year, CICR began trial cultivation of 15 indigenous varieties of cotton seeds, the results of which will be out by December. In April this year, US-based Monsanto, which makes genetically-modified Bt seeds, had threatened to quit the Indian market. Then, CICR had informed the Government that it is coming up with Indian varieties which can substitute for Bt cotton.
The Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation (BTMC) is looking at reopening six closed textile mills with Chinese help. The six textile mills owning a total of 153 acres of land are: Ahmed Bawani Textile Mills in Demra, Quaderia Textile Mills in Gazipur, Dinajpur Textiles Mills in Dinajpur, Dost Textiles Mills in Feni, Tangail Cotton Mills in Tangail and RR Textile Mills in Chittagong.
