Ajit B Chavan, Secretary, Textile Committee, has been given the charge of Additional Textile Commissioner in the office of Textile Commissioner, Mumbai in addition to his existing work with effect from October 7, 2019 until further orders vide Ministry of Textiles’ office order No. A-46011/3/2018-Estt dated October 7, 2019.
Chavan is an officer belonging to the 1994 civil services examination and is member of the Central Secretariat Service. He has a rich experience in policy design and implementation and has also diverse experience in the fields of textiles, trade and commerce, health and family welfare, heavy industries issues.
Currently, Chavan is the CEO of Textiles Committee, a statutory body formed by an Act of Parliament in 1963 and operating under the administrative control of the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. Textiles Committee, inter-alia, is responsible for ensuring quality of Indian textiles and textiles machinery and it has 28 offices across the country in all important textiles hub to promote exports, provide quality assurance and testing, certification and consultancy services to the textiles industry.
Before joining Textiles Committee in January 2017, Chavan worked as Director in the Government of India, Department of Commerce since July, 2010 and was handling agriculture exports policy. He was instrumental in the policy driven growth in the agriculture and allied exports from a mere Rs 53,566 crore in 2009-10 to Rs 1,95,065 crore in 2013-14 registering more than 350 per cent growth in just four years.
Chavan, possess a post graduate degree in Economics (with specialisation in international and monetary economics) from Mumbai University and has also acquired three professional qualifications while in service viz. Executive Masters in International Business (an Executive MBA) from IIFT, Post Graduate Diploma in Journalism and Mass Communication (PGDJMC), Post Graduate Diploma in Disaster Preparedness and Rehabilitation.
