The German braiding machine manufacturer Mayer & Cie. has introduced braiding machines with 48 carriers this autumn. The first MR-11 type machine equipped with 48 carriers is scheduled to leave the company’s Albstadt plant in Southern Germany before Christmas, followed by the first MR-15 with 48 carriers in spring 2025. These machines offer customers the advantage of larger inner tube diameters, reduced setup times, and consistent coil volumes, applicable for both yarn and wire.
Patrick Moser, head of the business unit, expressed the company’s enthusiasm for the development, stating that it significantly enhances the range of applications for their machines.
Larger hose diameters with more carriers
Previously, Mayer & Cie. offered braiding machines with 16, 20, 24, and 36 carriers. By equipping the MR-11 and MR-15 models with 48 carriers, the machines can now produce hoses with larger inner diameters. High-pressure hoses reinforced with wire can achieve inner diameters of up to 50 millimetres (2 inches), while textile braids can reach up to 150 millimetres (6 inches).
Same coil volume despite increased carriers
Despite the increased number of carriers, the braiding machines maintain the same coil volume. The Bobbin Standard, suitable for both yarns and wire, holds 1,580 cubic centimeters. For greater yarn capacity, the Bobbin Long and Bobbin Extra Long offer volumes of 3,920 and 5,170 cubic centimetres, respectively.
Patrick Moser explained that the additional carriers and larger coil volumes enable users to process greater quantities of material before requiring spool changes, resulting in shorter setup times and improved efficiency.
Rotor speed and carrier dynamics
The rotor speed remains constant across all MR-11 and MR-15 models, regardless of the number of carriers. However, the speed of individual carriers decreases as the total number increases.
Extensive configuration options
Mayer & Cie. currently offers two braiding systems: the MR-11 and MR-15, both utilising the maypole braiding principle. The MR-11 employs a 2-over-2 braid pattern, while the MR-15 uses a 3-over-3 pattern. Available in single, double, and triple-deck versions, these machines now support 16, 20, 24, 36, and 48 carriers.
Since 2019, the company has centralized its braiding machine production at its Albstadt headquarters, bolstering research and development capabilities. Patrick Moser noted that this move has proven successful, citing innovations like the SpeedBooster and expanded carrier options as key contributors to increased productivity.
