The Department of Handlooms and Textiles, Government of Tamil Nadu and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management (SVPITM) jointly organised a series of workshops on technical textiles. As part of the series of workshops, a training programme on technical textiles for the Tamil Nadu Textile Corporation (TNTC) staff was scheduled on July 28-29, 2018. A total of 15 staff members from TNTC were part of the proceeding.
As part of the inauguration of the workshop, Anitha, Assistant Professor, SVPITM, welcomed the participants and guests. Mohanraj, Head – Textiles, SVPITM, briefed the gathering on the various events that are planned as part of the programme. Dr C Ramesh Kumar, Director, SVPITM, proceeded with the presidential address. During his speech he emphasised on the value addition of products to gain profits. K Natarajan, Managing Director from the Tamil Nadu Textile Corporation, Coimbatore was the special guest for the inaugural function.
K Natarajan emphasised the importance of technical textiles. He added that the staff should make use of the opportunity so that new products can be developed with the existing facility and profit can be obtained. The inaugural session ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Ramasubramaniam, Assistant Professor, SVPITM. The first day of the programme was reserved for various expert lectures from technical textile domain.
Dr Hari Gopalakrishnan, Assistant Professor and Technical Consultant, Department of Textile Engineering, Dire Institute of Technology, Dire Dawa University, Ethiopia, shared his views on the production of technical textiles on modern looms.
Sudarsan Rajagopalan, Business Navigation and Innovation, Splendour Medicare, Coimbatore delivered a lecture on production of technical textile products with airjet looms. S Periyasamy, CEO, Atal Incubation Centre, Tiruppur, illustrated on the textile value chain; while P Muthaiah, Managing Director, Slivertex Engineers, Coimbatore, delivered a lecture on technical textile products using weaving technology. The second and final day was earmarked for lecture sessions as follows: • The first session was on sustainable products in technical textiles by Dr A Venkatachalam, Den-Department of Textile Technology, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam. He elaborated on the need for sustainable textile. • The second session was by Dr P Sureshkumar, Director, Research and Industrial Consultancy, Knowledge Institute of Technology, Salem. The agenda of his lecture was on, “Venturing into New Business and Preparation of Business Planâ€Â. • The third session was handled by M Palanivel Rajan, Chief Operating Officer, Asian Fabrix Private Limited, Karur. The core theme of his presentation was on the various products and manufacturing methods relating to home textiles. • The final session was a Strength Weakness Opportunity Threat analysis (SWOT analysis) on agro/home textiles and market. A SWOT analysis is usually taken by any company before investing and this is done to identify the internal strength and weakness, as well as external opportunity and threats. There was a feedback session to mark the end of the training programme. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr C Rameshkumar, Director, SVPITM.
