Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner and Administrator, NMMC, has been promoting sustainable and circular practices in waste management.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) announced that they had entered into an agreement with the Centre’s textile committee regarding the management of textile waste. It was mentioned that this agreement was part of their ongoing efforts to enhance cleanliness and sustainable practices in the city, aligning with the Swachh Survekshan initiative. The focus, as stated, was on effective categorisation of textile waste, which included used clothes, dry waste, and household hazardous waste, with the aim of contributing to the city’s ranking in the cleanliness survey.
Rajesh Narvekar, Commissioner and Administrator, NMMC, has been promoting sustainable and circular practices in waste management. He stated that an MoU had been signed between the civic body and the central textile committee for a practical project named ‘pilot project on sustainability and circularity in textile chain TVC (total viable count) by managing post-consumer textile waste.’ Narvekar added that this agreement marked a significant step in collaborating with the central government and various organisations, including SBI Foundation, IDH India, and Tisser Artisan Trust.
Narvekar further mentioned that this collaborative initiative focused on addressing the challenges posed by textile waste, emphasising the importance of circularity and sustainability in the textile chain. He noted that the agreement had been signed at an event in New Delhi, attended by representatives from the central textile committee, ministry of textiles, and officials from NMMC, including Dr Babasaheb Rajale, nodal officer for Swachh Bharat Mission, and additional city engineer Shirish Aradwad.
It was emphasised that this collaboration between the central textile committee and NMMC was a noteworthy step towards achieving a clean and environmentally conscious city. The agreement highlighted the significance of integrating circular practices in waste management, marking Navi Mumbai as the first municipal corporation in the country to engage in such a partnership with the Centre’s textile committee. Rajale mentioned that NMMC would be the first civic corporation in the country to have such a project for recycling and reuse of textile waste.
