Tirupur’s domestic garment sales exceed export
The lockdown seems to have encouraged more Indians to invest in knitwear. The domestic sales volume of Tirupur’s garment makers was Rs 300 billion during the last fiscal. This was higher than the region’s export values.
Tirupur, Tamil Nadu
Tirupur’s export values of
garments have always been higher than the local sales, and for the first time,
the last fiscal has seen higher local sales when compared to export values. In
the last fiscal, the sale within India was Rs 300 billion while the export
value was Rs 250 billion. Garment production value also increased by 12%.
The COVID-19 pandemic that hit
the garment industry in March 2020, bought down its export volumes. According
to Raja M Shanmugam, President, Tirupur
Exporters Association, the garment makers received a price markup for the
domestic market and larger brands increased their procurement by 10-12%.
