Chinese cotton imports hit all-time low
Chinese cotton imports reached an all-time low in September, as large domestic inventories reduced reliance on foreign supplies, at a time when economic slowdown is weighing on demand. China imported just 50,900 tonnes of cotton in September, a decline of 59 per cent YoY. This is the lowest monthly import since records began in 2005, and the second month of record low imports in a row.

ASEAN to become ´world´s factory´ in a decade
Rising labour costs, among other reasons, have driven Chinese manufacturers to set up operations in Southeast Asian countries. A study by ANZ Bank economists suggest that Southeast Asia would take over from China to become the ´world´s factory´ in the next 10-15 years, citing its youthful workforce and strategic location as catalysts for this shift.
Cotton king under siege?
Cotton imports by China in June have fallen by 26 per cent already. The see-sawing of prices in major countries including India is causing a lot of anxieties. Chinese prices are under pressure from significant left-over commercial stocks as well as sales of state reserve cotton, kicked off recently.
USDA predicts output deficit in 6 cotton years
In their May report, the USDA has released its first complete set of estimates for an upcoming crop year. The projection for world production in 2015-16 is 111.3 million bales, which represents an 8.0 million bale decrease (-6.7 per cent) relative to the 119.3 million bales harvested in 2014-15.

Cotton prices to remain subdued
Cotton prices in India are expected to remain subdued in the near future. Coming to the domestic scenario, prices are likely to trend in line with the international markets as domestic prices have plunged below the international levels offering no triggers for upside movement.
