Cotton USA provides global insight on cotton

The Cotton Council International organized an invitation only seminar evening recently at Trident Oberoi, Mumbai. The seminar offered useful insights on the global scenario of cotton and the cotton textile industry. The industry experts and the key decision makers from the cotton textile industry gathered to debate on how India can take a lead in driving the cotton consumption and how cotton would continue to steer the growth of Indian textile industry.

Cotton Council International was also exhibiting at fibre and yarn exposition to promote a revitalized brand vision emphasizing U.S. cotton´s purity, quality and responsibility. The excellent quality comes from the U.S. farmers who are passionate about their crop, their work and their communities. COTTON USA works with the quality manufacturers in the world to ensure that the consumers get the best quality along with the brand. COTTON USA works very closely with more than 12 COTTON USA licensees in India across all the major product groups which includes yarns, apparel fabrics and home textiles.

Responsible and transparent fibre sourcing is an integral part of the COTTON USA marketing and licensing programme, which operates globally and offers a wide range of services. Cotton Council International´s sourcing programme supports buyers in sourcing COTTON USA, from raw material to the end product, with a focus on responsible cotton production and sourcing through participation in the Cotton LEADS´ programme.

At the COTTON USA seminar evening, Cotton Council International and Supima provided information about the global cotton market and sourcing along with the unique promotional and marketing services that U.S. cotton industry offers. Sean Callanan, Manager, Global Operations ´ Cotton Council International, presented on the economic outlook for global cotton production and consumption with update on U.S. cotton and key cotton consuming nations.

Supima often referred to as ´Cashmere of Cottons´ is acknowledged as a premium fibre with an exceptional attributes of softness, strength and brilliance of colour to produce luxury products. In 2014, American Image Awards honoured Supima as the premium fibre brand of the Year. Marc Lewkowitz, Executive Vice President, Supima, shared his thoughts on how Supima has successfully collaborated with the global premium brands and retailers.

In 2015-16, Indian mills are projected to consume 5.4 million metric tonne of cotton fibre, which accounts for 22 per cent of global cotton fibre consumption. Cotton consumption of Indian textile mills have grown at 5 per cent CAGR in last five years, a period which was amongst one of the most challenging period for the cotton industry. Cotton textiles have contributed significantly to India´s exports, this is also supported by the international trade theories. According to Ricardo´s principle of Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), which is amongst one of the most important concepts among the international trade economics, The RCA of Indian cotton textiles has increased from 1.97 to 3.12 in last five years, which highlights competitiveness of Indian cotton textiles. In 2014, Indian textile industry surpassed the $100 billion benchmark, to add another $100 billion, India needs to gear up its cotton textile exports and the domestic retail consumption. COTTON USA is conducting the panel discussion where eminent members from various sectors of cotton textiles value chain would share their thoughts on ´How India can take a leadership position in Cotton Consumption in the near future´.
