After registering a decline of about 9 per cent in cotton season (CS) 2018-19, India’s cotton production is likely to witness a double-digit growth of about 16 per cent in CS 2019-20 with production at 6.6 billion kg during the year on back of favourable monsoon as well as increased MSP that led to increased cotton crop sowing. For CS20, the acreage under cotton is estimated to have marginally increased by about 1.3 per cent to 12.8 million hectares.

Asia’s spot paraxylene (PX) prices are likely to remain under downward pressure from ample regional supply amid continued weakness in downstream markets, industry sources said. Asia’s PX inventory remained high, with end-users not likely to hold on to excess volumes in the near term, market sources said. Cargoes from Singapore, India, the Middle East and the US for November and December shipments remained on offer in Asia. Excess monthly supply is estimated at 20,000 tonnes, but traders said that the combined volumes for October and November shipments could be as high as 100,000 tonnes, augmented by Europe cargoes, market sources said.

Indian producers of purified terephthalic acid (PTA), a key raw material for manufacturing polyester chips, have cause for cheer with the Finance Ministry imposing definitive anti-dumping duty (ADD) on its imports from China, Iran, Taiwan, Indonesia and Malaysia. This Revenue Department move-which came less than a month after the recommendation of the designated authority in the Commerce Ministry-is expected to come as a relief for Reliance Industries and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL).
