Glory of khadi in 100 years
The clothes reflect the personality of individuals and can be used as a marker of a group, community, family, region and even country. Khadi is one such cloth that had played a key role in the freedom struggle of India and thus has been referred to as the ‘fabric of Indian independence’, narrate Shruti Gupta, Deepali Rastogi and Ritu Mathur.
Clothing is among the basic amenities required by the 1.2105 billion strong, and growing, population of India. The Indian textile industry, which caters to this need, has an estimated market size of $108 billion. There are two broad segments within the industry, namely the traditional hand-woven and hand-spun textile segments, and the modernised mill segment (Nair & Dhanuraj, 2016).

Spun yarn exports drop 36%
In July 2016, 83 countries imported spun yarn from India, with Bangladesh at the top, accounting for 18 per cent of the total value with imports rising 24 per cent year on year in terms of volume and 22 per cent in value. China ranked second in July and accounted for around 18 per cent of all spun yarn exported from India. Peru was the third largest importer of spun yarns. These three top importers together accounted for around 42 per cent of all spun yarns exported from India in July.

RSWM scales up yarn production capacity to 1.32 lakh tonne
The Rs 7000-cr textile to power conglomerate LNJ Bhilwara Group has announced a consolidation of its flagship textiles company RSWM, with merger of Cheslind Textiles Ltd and expansion of its plant at Kharigram unit.
The two global Swiss giants in the textile machinery´Oerlikon & Rieter ´achieved a double-digit growth in 2014. The Oerlikon Group sustained its strong operational performance and reported a sales increase by 16.1 per cent to CHF 3,215 million, driven by organic and inorganic growth.
Good trend of business continues at Rieter
Rieter closed the first half of 2014 with significantly higher net profits of CHF4.3 mn or 2.7 per cent of sales, respectively. The market environment in which Rieter operates was consistently favourable in the first half of 2014.
